What is the Iol Master?

UNINSURED SERVICE $200.00

The challenge for Carl Zeiss Company was to find innovative solutions for measurements of the eye and for pre-operative computation of intra-ocular lenses (IOL). The result of this development work is the IOL Master – a high precision instrument revolutionizing all previous techniques and setting a new standard for the measurement of the ocular axis.

The FDA has approved this new device for measuring the eye prior to cataract surgery, the Zeiss Hunphrey IOL Master. It is the first non-contact optical coherence biometer and it allows fast, accurate measurements of eye length and surface curvature, necessary for cataract surgery.

Optical biometry in a non-contact technique is easy on the patient: no local anaesthesia and no risk of infection from patient to patient and no risk of corneal lesions. The results from this machine are accurate, consistent and precise.

IOL MEASUREMENTS TAKEN PRIOR TO SURGERY CAN REDUCE THE PATIENTS’ NEED FOR DISTANCE GLASSES AFTER CATARACT SURGERY.

The IOL Master is a new, highly accurate, “laser-like” device available to you as an optional upgrade to the standard ultrasound that is covered by OHIP.  More accurate measurements will allow you to be less dependent on your distance glasses after surgery. This device is an advanced technology that is not covered by OHIP and is not deemed medically necessary.
